Passionflower Sue, known for her wearables, large-scale designs, and overall ingenuity (we like to call her the Floral MacGyver) hopes to inspire her students to see themselves as artists and push the art of floristry forward. She will share the essential foundational techniques that once mastered, allow a sense of ease to the process of arranging, and will offer insight into essential art & design principles that have transformed the way she designs. Once these techniques have been learned, students will be encouraged to follow their own unique points of view and make the things they’re craving to see. On top of all of that, Sue is passionate about sustainability in the floral industry, and will offer techniques that will make low waste and sustainable design attainable.

This is a classic technique that doesn’t get the credit to deserves! The “spiral” bouquet, also called the “hand-tied” bouquet or “Dutch bouquet” refers to a classic technique that’s used to make reliable, sturdy, yet dynamic and artful bouquets. The stems are added into the hand in a uniform, elegant way resulting in a composition full of volume and movement, a narrow and easy to hold binding point, and graceful, organized stems.
ANATOMY OF A CENTERPIECE
Sue will share the design theory concepts that transformed the way she works, including the “golden ratio,” and the “rule of thirds.” She will also discuss the floral layer system used to create interesting and effortless naturally-styled centerpieces. These processes are meant to de-mystify material selection, lend an ease to the process of designing, answer the questions related to placement of materials, and take the guesswork out of ordering. The ease of process of these concepts allow will translate to all sorts of designs- from tiny floral tattoos to large-scale floral installations.
Sue will demonstrate her favorite methods to make all manner of wearables- from simple, petite and immediately sellable, to the complex, editorial and fantastical.
LARGE SCALE DESIGN
Sue will demonstrate her go-to mechanics for making all sorts of floral installations from simple arch pieces to more complex climbing, hanging, and over-sized pieces. Reliable material choices, hydration methods, and sustainable mechanics will be the focus.
