Valentine’s Day at Mayesh Portland

The week leading up to Valentine’s Day is always the busiest week of the year for both us, the wholesaler, and you, the florist! Local news station KGW stopped by our Mayesh Portland branch to get a behind the scenes look into this busy yet lovely holiday. Check out their interview with branch manager Amy Gebhardt to see just what goes on in order for us to get those bunches on bunches of red roses to you!

Mayesh Valentine's Day VOLC/FLED Farms Ecuador

Forget Christmas, one of the biggest holidays of the year is upon us… Valentine’s Day! There’s a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes at Mayesh to stock our customers’ shelves with roses… so we thought it would be fun to share the process leading up to the big day.

Juan Carlos is part of our Purchasing Team, and every year, from about January 27th through February 6th, he visits the farms in Ecuador to walk the fields and greenhouses for quality control and to make sure our orders meet our expectations.

During his visits, he’s checking on a few things…

QUALITY:  that our roses are coming in free of issues, such as botrytis and other diseases

TIMING:  that  the farms are on time with the orders and deliveries, and then that the Cargo agency at the airport is on schedule

Valentine’s Day is most definitely one of the busiest times of the year for us, but it is so important to us to provide quality products to our customers for such a big day. We wish you all a successful holiday… see you on the other side!

The Flower Bicycles of Ecuador

Guest Blogger: Sabrina Mesa

During my trip to Quito, Ecuador last year, I had a chance to visit farms, attend an international floral expo and meet some great floral people. During one of our tours of the city, we stopped at an impressive city square where designers had decorated over 10 bicycles with colorful roses, spray roses, spider mums and accent elements such as gypsophilia, hypericum, eryngium and solidaster. Each one was different and beautiful. The entire square was guarded by police and government security to ensure that these art pieces were unharmed for the days they were on display. The square was surrounded by restaurants, cafes and shops. One of our floral friends was even interviewed by the local media. I personally could not stop taking pictures of these arrangements on two wheels. Here are some of my favorite ones.

Sign Up to Participate – Memorial Day Roses

Memorial Day Flowers

We are very excited to participate in this year’s Memorial Day Flowers!!  Read on to get all of the details and to register:

A Rose for the Headstone, Another Rose to Take Home in Memory

Memorial Day 2012: 50,000 roses were donated by farms and distributed by florists at 95 cemeteries or ceremonies in twenty-six states.

2013 Goal: The Memorial Day Flowers ”Florists & Community” program has expanded and will be offered to two hundred florists nationally.

Participating florists will receive 400 roses, a Memorial Day Flowers banner, and 200 informational handouts. There is a space on the back of the handouts to place your shop’s information. One (1) box per company please.

Your 400 roses are donated by South American and U.S. rose growers. For the first 40 Mayesh Wholesale Florist customers there is no charge as Mayesh will pick up the freight and handling cost.

There are several ways to use the roses you will receive within your communities:

  • Contact your local cemetery and set up a table to distribute roses to visitors. Each visitor will be given two stems of roses: one to place on a headstone and one to take home in remembrance of a friend or relative. Optionally, you could provide a service for families that are unable to visit by sending a digital picture of the rose lying on the headstone.

This is a local news video link from one of the participating florists in Auburn, Massachusetts:

  • Distribute roses at your local Memorial Day parade or ceremony.
  • Place a sign at your shop offering a free Memorial Day Rose to anyone who comes in on the preceding Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Participating in the Memorial Day Flowers “Florists & Community” program is an excellent way to connect with your community and honor those who served. A single rose, placed on a headstone, is a floral expression of appreciation.

The cornerstone of the 2012 events was Arlington National Cemetery. 60,000 Ecuadorian roses and 2,000 Californian bouquets were handed out by 120
