Sunflower

Sunflowers have been cultivated by man for nourishment for at least 5,000 years, particularly for the seeds and oils, as well as the roots. They were held in high esteem by the Incas and The Aztecs as a metaphor for the Sun, which they worshipped in their cultures. Louis XIV of France, often referred to as the “Sun King”, was infatuated with the flower for a while, until it became evident that it would proliferate like a weed, and was certainly not a rare item. Today, there are many cultivars, in a wide range of autumn colors, as well as a few with interesting textures.
