Oriental lilies are a class of predominantly Japanese origin, with large flowers, often highly perfumed, that had hanging blooms, or were, at best, outward-facing. It was not until 1974 that Leslie Woodruff, working in Oregon, made a massive breakthrough with the classic ‘Stargazer’, deep pink with white margins, which was the first Oriental lily that had upwards facing blooms (hence the name). It immediately made a tremendous impact on the cut-flower industry, being introduced in 1982 as a cut-flower. ‘Casablanca’ quickly followed, a pure white, upward facing lily that has strong stems, with a heavy vanilla perfume. During the 1980s this was the white wedding flower of choice, with prices on occasion as high as $20 per stem!
