On March 5th, a group of us from Mayesh had the opportunity to attend the American Grown Field to Vase dinner at Westland Orchids in Carpinteria, CA. This was the first of 10 events to translate the momentum of “farm to fork” in such a way that helps people understand that the flowers on the table are as fresh, local and sustainable as the food on their plates.
Upon entering the greenhouse, we were greeted with the color and aroma of a profusion of blooming cymbidium orchids. It was a treat for the senses.
The working greenhouse was transformed into a chic dining room with a table set for 100. Overhead were strings of lights and on the table were the beautiful orchids, gerbera daisy, roses, and chrysanthemums from Westland Orchids and neighboring flower farms. Wines were served from a local winery and the dinner was a seasonal, locally sourced, four-course meal. The lettuce in the first course salad was even grown right there at Westland and the orchids on the table were cut right from the greenhouse we were in. It doesn’t get any more local than that.
The dinner was attended by flower growers, wholesale florists, floral designers, and the public was also invited. It was an evening to share a passion for flowers with old friends and new. Tours were also given in the cymbidium greenhouse and the gerbera greenhouse. We often forget what is like to see the flowers growing on the plant, so it was an opportunity to learn more about how they are grown, and see the processes that take place in order for us to have the beautiful cut flowers we work with every day.
It was really a treat to dine among the flowers. The atmosphere was relaxed and everyone was smiling and laughing. The evening was all about slow flowers and food. It was also an opportunity for us to slow down from our hectic schedules, share our interests with each other, and appreciate the beauty around us. We regularly tour farms and green houses, but it is not often that we get to attend a party in a greenhouse. It was a great experience.
The next dinner will be on April 15 at the Ranuncula fields in Carlsbad, The Flower Fields. If you have never seen that, I encourage you to go. You will not be disappointed! Reserve your seat now, using this link and don’t forget to use promo code “MAYESH” to save $50 per ticket.
Hope to see you there.
