2017 Memorial Day Flowers Recap

 

 

Two weeks ago, we participated once again in a very special event, Memorial Day Flowers. Memorial Day is a day to recognize the fallen men and women who have served our country, and we are honored to be a part in such an important event. We received a few sets of images from places we sent roses, we hope they’ll inspire you to participate next year!

We participated in the Memorial Day celebration at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Coalinga. There was a great turn out from our Avenal community as you can see by the picture.  Thank you to Avenal Police Dept and their explorer program.

We gave them away at a local cookie stand who was giving vets free cookies at our farmer’s market and then at the cemetery.  We marked the flags with roses (each flag has a dog tag on it.)   And some we just gave to people or placed on a grave who were there at the cemetery.

The Memorial Day Flowers event is upon us, and once again we have committed to donate twenty-five Memorial Day Flower kits! It is so important to recognize the fallen men and women who have served our country, and this is a great program to participate in along with the help of our customers.

Please fill out the form if you are interested in receiving a flower kit (250 roses, handouts and a banner). If selected, you will be charged $40 and will also need to send in pictures of your Memorial Day activities.

Filing out the form is NOT a guarantee to receive a Memorial Day Flowers kit. You will receive an email from Mayesh marketing confirming your participation.

Petal it Forward Recap

Petal it Forward

 

I’m excited to introduce my little sister, Desiree, as today’s guest blogger! Des followed in my footsteps by attending the University of Oregon, and is now in her senior year there. Our dad, Pat Dahlson, asked her participate in SAF’s Petal it Forward this year with Dandelions Flowers & Gifts, a local flower shop in Eugene, OR, so that she did! Here’s what she had to say:

When I was asked to help with Petal It Forward for the local flower shop where I go to college in Eugene, Ore. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Accompanied by two of my fellow sisters of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, we made our way to the flower shop the day before the event to prep the flowers. We prepped bucketfuls of single wrapped roses, attaching to each a small blurb explaining what Petal It Forward is all about.

 

 

Learning about the flower industry and how the event would run from Shirley, of Dandelion’s Flowers & Gifts, made us all excited about what we were contributing to. My favorite part, though, was the actual Petal It Forward event the following day. I met up with the Dandelion’s ladies right next to the University of Oregon campus Wednesday morning, ready to pass out roses, one for each person to keep for themselves, and another to pass on to someone else.

 

Participating in the actual passing out of flowers was even more exciting than I expected. At first people were hesitant to take the flowers, assuming there had to be some kind of catch to receiving free flowers. Once they understood the “pay it forward” aspect of the event, people were immediately on board. The smiles that spread across people’s faces because of the free flowers made the positive power of flowers so obvious. The coolest part of being involved in Petal It Forward was seeing how that passing out simple roses made an average Wednesday morning just a little bit brighter.

Not only was it a great experience handing out roses, but the local news even came out to interview Shirley and learn about Petal it Forward . We were all on the news that night, and it was so encouraging to see that the community really supports the message that Petal it Forward sends. Though only in its second year, I’m confident Petal It Forward will gain even more attention and continue to spread smiles, one flower at a time.

 

Mayesh Frightening Florals Instagram Challenge

SAF’s Petal it Forward & Floral Companies that Give Back

If you weren’t already aware, SAF is gearing up for their second annual Petal it Forward event in New York City! This year it will take place on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, and SAF invites you to bring this idea to your community. The basic idea stems from studies that show how flowers have an immediate impact on happiness and a long-term positive effect on moods. They’ve taken that research and turned it into this fabulous idea, basically “paying it forward” with flowers!

On October 19th, SAF’s marketing team will “hit the streets of New York and randomly present two flower bouquets each to people through the city. Recipients are asked to ‘Petal it Forward’ by giving one of their bouquets to someone special in their life, or even a stranger who could use a smile.”

Well, here at Mayesh we absolutely LOVE the idea of giving back to the community and using flowers for good. Why NOT take advantage of them?! We were inspired to dig a little further, and find out what other ways florists and companies are using flowers to give back. Here’s what we came up with:

 

The Bloom Project

The Bloom Project

 

Founded in 2007 by Heidi Berkman in Bend, Ore., The Bloom Project is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that provides fresh floral bouquets to hospice and palliative care patients. The Bloom Project expanded to Portland in 2013, and receives each of its flowers from donations provided by wholesale floral companies, growers and local grocery stores. The flowers are repurposed by volunteers into beautiful bouquets ready to deliver to local hospice and palliative care patients. Volunteers come from all different backgrounds; many are retired or have little to no floral experience. Members of the team with floral design experience host training sessions, teaching new volunteers how to: care for the flowers, identify which flowers to keep and how to create a bouquet. Berkman and her team of volunteers are committed to sustainable business practices. Not only are they eco-friendly in their efforts to repurpose flowers from their partners, but also by composting floral waste.

Since 2009, The Bloom Project has delivered over 153,000 bouquets with over 62,000 volunteer hours donated in the communities we serve!

Random Acts of Flowers

 

Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and overall well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement and personal moments of kindness. Founded by Larsen Jay in 2008 after he experienced the challenges of a prolonged recovery from a near-fatal accident, the not-for-profit agency now operates branches in Knoxville, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Silicon Valley and Indianapolis. Run largely by a dedicated corps of volunteers, Random Acts of Flowers has served more than 150,000 people nationwide who are struggling with injury, illness or the aging process.

Ashlee Robertson: “Most of my brides choose to donate their blooms. This practice started seven years ago actually. I was driving home from work one night and thinking about how I really wanted to do something to give back to our community. I had a newborn and was working a million hours but new that I was just beyond blessed to be doing what I loved. I said a little prayer to be sent something great that I could do to give back and I would do it. The very next morning my phone rang and it was a woman with hospice care. I couldn’t believe it. They had a group called “Friends with Flowers” and she was requesting our old flowers to be used to cheer the patients up. I said “I can do better than that.” Since then, they have been coming to my shop every Wednesday and arranging flowers provided by one of our local wholesaler and our shop to deliver to patients. It has been an amazing partnership.

As our wedding business grew, I started to notice how many times we’d arrive back at a venue to retrieve our glassware and all of the flowers remained. It was unbelievable.  So, we started offering a service to pick up the flowers as well as our glass and donate them in the community. We take them to children’s floors at the hospitals, the cancer center, and several assisted living facilities currently. Each week we kind of think of new places they should go. We love how it makes our brides feel to give back in such a big way and we love how it makes the recipients feel as well.”

We stumbled upon this and HAD to share, such a unique and different way to repurpose flowers! Brooklyn-based artist Cara Piazza uses waste she collects from florists, restaurants and organic providers to naturally dye clothing and accessories. Check out the article HuffPost did here!

Adopted Mayesh Lonely Bouquets 2016

Two weeks ago, we hosted our third Mayesh Lonely Bouquet Design Day, but this year, we extended it to a full week! Our branches had an awesome turnout – Portland alone had 42 designers help send out almost 100 bouquets! Our favorite part about Lonely Bouquet is seeing all of the pictures and heart-warming stores flood in as strangers began finding these lonely bouquets around town.

We wanted to share the joy that was felt with this year’s Lonely Bouquet, starting with this sweet story sent to us by Paula of Southern California, about her parents’ experience finding one of the bouquets:

 

Dear Mayesh Flowers,

My elderly parents live in Santa Paula, CA and go to the local Thrift store on Main street every week as one of their regular outings.
 My mother found a “Lonely Bouquet that was asking for a home” this week. She was so excited and happily took the bouquet home and put them in her special vase. She called all her kids (there are 6 of us) and shared her sweet find. I just wanted to send you a “HUGE THANK YOU!!” You have made my mother SO HAPPY! It is small sweet gestures like this, that can make someones day. I love a business that thinks like this and does thoughtful gifts of kindness. I would love to be a patron of your business, but after browsing your website, it looks like it is exclusive to business or private companies.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been receiving stories & photos from customers who participated in the Memorial Day Flowers event. It was a day to use flowers to honor our U.S. service men and women who are no longer with us. We hope you had a great Memorial Day as well, remembering heroes past.

This year, we participated in the delivery and placement of 18,000 roses at the Arizona National Cemetery in Phoenix. The coordination of the volunteers was done by our customer Judy Haenel from Tulip Tree. Of the approximately 200 volunteers, six of them were our customers. Four employees participated, two brought their children. Mario brought his son. Krista’s daughter brought her Honor Society group and they received Community Service hours and got their picture taken with Senator John McCain. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will all receive badges. It was meaningful for all involved.

These are the ladies that helped me hand them out. They are from the chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and The Daughters of the War of 1812. The service was very moving, and the people that we gave the roses to were happy that they had something to put on their love ones grave.

We were so lucky to participate this year and can’t wait for next. We had about ten Military spouses and their children and eight Active Duty in uniform join us on Monday to place the roses at Ivy Lawn in Ventura CA. This was so special and touching for each and everyone of them. I already have a list of people that are looking forward to joining us next year.

Since we were the only Florist in Ventura County to have ever participated and that we had Military spouses and active duty involved the local paper joined us.

I wanted to share the pictures from our Memorial Day festivities here in Klamath Falls. We had an amazing time talking with everyone and handing out complimentary roses during the Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in honor of those who served. We handed out 350 roses yesterday. I would say about half stayed at the memorial and the other half were taken to grave sites throughout the city.

We had an incredible time doingWe had an incredible time doing this service for the Vets and their families. We had such a great response to the roses which were incredible!! Most beautiful red roses ever. We fresh cut, conditioned, stored for Monday…all were perfect. We set up our banner, some flags that I purchased to give away also, at Courthouses Park which is a historical landmark and in the center of Madera. The Avenue of flags were flowing in the wind, each with a name of a Veteran on the pole, spectacular. Our community does an awesome job of putting on the observance of our armed forces who gave their all. I was honored to have been a small part of it.  Thank you Mayesh and the Greenrose growers for providing such a great service. We were so happy to be selected to participate in such a wonderful event.

We partnered with a customer who works for Wreaths Across America. He enlisted the help of some cute brownies to help him pass the roses out to veterans and their families.

Numerous employees had to work Memorial Day & it warmed the hearts of many to share this visual arrangement honoring all our Troops serving past and present. This was the first time we had participated in the Memorial Day Flowers and we LOVED it!!  My business partner is also my sister so we share the same sense of humble gratitude for our Veterans. It was a huge honor for us to be able to give back to our community in this way.  We joined City View cemetery on Monday for their ceremony and were out of our flowers within about twenty minutes! I traveled around with the Post 21 American Legion Riders, Color Guard, and the Women’s Auxiliary Group representatives. We performed ceremonies at 8 different cemeteries/memorial sites around Yamhill County, Oregon, ending at the Evergreen Aviation Museum’s Veteran’s Memorial. With the roses we created huge 12″ and 9″ hand-glued composite ‘poppy pretenders’ that we used throughout the gala decor in the cocktails, bars, courtyard and reception entrance area. The arrangements were enormous! My personal favorite detail is the red rose and silver thistle wreaths I created for the two bronze lions flanking the entrance to the courtyard. The remaining 75 roses were distributed to guests, most of whom were active new enlistees, military, veterans and their families as they left for the evening. Big thanks for making this annual event super special!

Memorial Day was awesome!! We had the opportunity to meet with so many families who lost loved ones who served our county. What was a sad day for many, we were able to make it a beautiful day with the roses and simply taking the time to listen to their stories. We first began our venture at the Gary Miles Veteran’s Center in Ecorse, MI and spent most of our day there sitting and talking to veterans who lost fellow soldiers. We then went to the International Gospel Center in Ecorse, MI where many of the families gathered to honor the loved ones they have lost. The dynamic of the roses seemed to change the atmosphere everywhere we went. We were even asked to go to a few other venues to spread our joy with roses that day. It was an amazing day! Thank you so much for allowing us to spread such joy here in Michigan. We look forward to celebrating the bravery of every man and woman who served our great country every year from now on.

What is American Flowers Week?

Launched in 2015, AFW is week-long celebration of domestic flowers to raise consumer awareness and unite America’s flower farmers with the U.S. floral industry. The dates coincide with Independence Day (June 28-July 4, 2016). The Press Announcement can be found here.

What is the purpose?

The goal of American Flowers Week is to engage the public, policymakers and the media in a conversation about the origins of their flowers. As an advocacy effort, the campaign is timed to coincide with America’s Independence Day on July 4th, providing florists, retailers, wholesalers and flower farmers a patriotic opportunity to promote American grown flowers.

Who can participate?

Anyone who grows, designs, markets, sells or just enjoys flowers can get involved to highlight domestic, local American-grown flowers. Participation ranges from individual floral designers and flower shops to wholesalers and retailers. We are eager to document involvement through social media and participants are encouraged to use the hashtag “#americanflowersweek” on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

How to get involved?

There are a number of visual resources available at AmericanFlowersWeek.com, including logo, badge, social media icons and a USA Floral Coloring MapDownloadable fact sheets, infographics and the 2016 American Flowers Week logo and social media badges are available for growers and florists to use for their own marketing and promotion efforts.

In the past we have hosted a Mayesh Lonely Bouquet Design Day, BUT we always struggled to find the best day to host the event that works with everyone’s schedule. Seeing that finding one perfect day is impossible paired with a suggestion to have a Lonely Bouquet Design Week, we decided to run with the idea! Please mark your calendars to join us during June 20 – 24 to design your own Lonely Bouquet.

For those of you who are not familiar with The Lonely Bouquet, here is a quick summary: it is a global initiative with a goal of making strangers happy with flowers. Participants create a small bouquet, add a “take me” tag, and leave the bouquet somewhere public to be found and taken home. It’s a simple but powerful idea.

I was able to connect with Emily Avenson, of Fleuropen, who launched (inter)National Lonely Bouquet Day back in 2013 to encourage participation from others. I asked Emily how she came up with the name “Lonely Bouquet” and she said, “… I tried to think of something that would appeal to the average passer-by. People often hesitate to take the flowers, and the word “lonely” seemed like something that would trigger an empathetic response and encourage someone to take the flowers home, whether they “need” them or not.”

Emily wanted emphasize “the importance of spreading happiness, love, and good. Whether you choose to participate in the Lonely Bouquet project or find your own special way of cultivating kindness, the world we live in can use all of the flower-power that we have. It might seem silly to think that a small bunch of flowers can make a difference… but it can, and it does.”

LONELY BOUQUET DESIGN DAY DETAILS

Mayesh will provide an array of flowers free of charge to design your lonely bouquet on June 20-24, 2016.Local Mayesh customers must come to their Mayesh location to design their bouquet.

  • For shipping customers, please let your Mayesh rep know that you are interested in participating and they can pull together some blooms for the bouquet to ship with your order.
  • Shipping customer must submit a photo of their completed Lonely Bouquet to alidahlson@mayesh.com.
  • Mayesh will provide Lonely Bouquet tags to attach. Please bring a business card that you can attach as well.
  • Besides Mayesh flowers, designs may contain any other accessories and use any container, as long as it is provided by the designer.
  • For shipping customers, we recommend you ship an order ahead of time. Please work with your sales rep on the details; participants assume freight costs.
    Participants must be current customers of Mayesh Wholesale Florist and in good standing.
  • Submitted photos become the property of Mayesh Wholesale and may be used for promotion and publicity.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, we asked a few of our Floral Forum designers to share some unique ideas to offer your customers. As far as flower selection, novelty carnations can make a striking statement for Mother’s Day. The antique tones such as Antigua make for a unique offering and still allow for lots of room to make a more personalized design. Container choices are also a big sell for Mom’s day. Something that evokes emotion and can double as a keepsake is a great idea Try offering to your customers the option of taking something like gardening boots and tools and working them into a special design. Really it’s about letting flowers and design express the sentiment behind the flowers. Flowers have a way of saying what words cannot.

Succulents/echeveria in terrariums and in cloches are huge for us. Costume jewelry as an add on sale, incorporated into ribbon or wire on a vase is nice as well!
