Mayesh Lonely Bouquet Design Day 2017

Mayesh Lonely Bouquet Design Day 2017

Every year we’re asked if we’re going to continue doing our own Mayesh Lonely Bouquet, and every year, the answer is a resounding YES! We love this event just as much as you do, so we’re excited to announce that this year’s Lonely Bouquet Design Day will be held on Wednesday, June 28th at all Mayesh locations.

For those of you who are not familiar with The Lonely Bouquet, here is a quick summary: it is a global initiative with a goal of making strangers happy with flowers. Participants create a small bouquet, add a “take me” tag, and leave the bouquet somewhere public to be found and taken home. It’s a simple but powerful idea.

Our marketing director, Yvonne, was able to connect with Emily Avenson, of Fleuropen, who launched (inter)National Lonely Bouquet Day back in 2013 to encourage participation from others. I asked Emily how she came up with the name “Lonely Bouquet” and she said, “… I tried to think of something that would appeal to the average passer-by. People often hesitate to take the flowers, and the word “lonely” seemed like something that would trigger an empathetic response and encourage someone to take the flowers home, whether they “need” them or not.”

Emily wanted emphasize “the importance of spreading happiness, love, and good. Whether you choose to participate in the Lonely Bouquet project or find your own special way of cultivating kindness, the world we live in can use all of the flower-power that we have. It might seem silly to think that a small bunch of flowers can make a difference… but it can, and it does.”

Mornings with Mayesh Replay May 2017

Did you miss our first Mornings with Mayesh show?? If so, I have the replay for you here! I think our first show turned out amazing!! I want to thank everyone who submitted questions and who were able to join us live because, without you, Dave and I would have just been talking to ourselves.

Be sure to save your seat for our June 6th show at 10 am EST / 7 am PST! If you have questions or topics that you would like us to discuss, share them in the comments below.

Here are the topics and questions that were covered along with the links that were mentioned:

  • What is happening in the world of flowers?
  • What is the best way to keep stock from getting gummy?
  • What is the best way to order flowers at the right time so that they peak on event day?
  • Please describe the process to order and receive Mayesh product when I have events out of my local area so that they open perfectly the day of the event.
  • What is the best estimate/contract software for a small florist?
  • What is the best sources for supplies – buckets, vessels, containers, etc.
  • How do other florists mark up their flowers and goods? Also, when incorporating labor, what percentage do most use?
  • What the best method to make a garland? Any hints to ensure it stays together really well? Is is more cost effective to make yourself or order from a company that specializes in garlands?
    • https://youtu.be/py81Tx7LSeU
  • What’s your favorite base to make a flower crown with?
  • For wedding florists, how do you handle clients that want to mix their DIY flowers (fresh or silk) with your designs?  We have an exclusivity “preference” but it can be hard to explain/enforce at times, especially with there being so many  DIY brides in our area of the midwest!  I would love to hear how other professionals handle this situation.
  • What are your favorite corsage and boutonniere flowers? I love using orchids and callas for their durability but they don’t seem to be very popular right now. And roses can fade quite quickly in the heat of summer wedding season.
  • How do you create “hoop” bouquets? I don’t quite know how to keep all of the flowers alive and still get a sturdy end product.
  • Marketing news: Facebook algorithm update, new features for Facebook group admins, Instagram Stories and MikMak, Pinterest’s “more like this” and Lens.

For next week’s workshop, we’re lucky enough to have three sponsors graciously providing their services: gorgeous, silk ribbon from tono + co., pretty tabletop candles from Creative Candles, and trendy furnishings & accessories from local rental company Folklore! We couldn’t be more excited to feature these three fabulous companies and have their products be a part of the day. So let’s get excited and learn a bit more about each of them!

tono & co. is the passion of Janelle Nicole Wylie, owner of the floral company Lavenders Flowers. Working closely with brides for almost a decade, color became the natural center of Janelle’s work leading her to the tradition of hand-dying fabrics.  tono & co. finds its inspiration in the first-hand knowledge Janelle gained while studying painting & color theory in Florence, Italy. In Italian, tono refers to the gradual increase in color tone, creating a fluid color spectrum. Through the learning process of mixing oil paint, Janelle developed a sensitivity to color tone. Her passions for combining color and texture have evolved into the art of hand-dyed textiles. (Images by Sposto Photograpy)

Folklore is the result of best friends Taylor & Maggie’s combined passion for furniture & design, here’s a little about how it all began:

What’s Folklore you ask? Well technically it goes something like this:

“Traditional stories and legends attached to a particular people, place, or object passed down from generation to generation.”

We look for pieces that have a past and tell a story. Pieces that aren’t afraid to show where they’ve been and what they’ve been through.

It all started with one upholstered chair and after that we began furiously buying amazing pieces of furniture, accessories, and so on without looking back.  Slowly but surely we decided we would rent them for weddings, baby showers, and other events.  Our collection grew fast, so fast in fact it spilled out from the garage into our hallways, living room, bedroom, kitchen until we built a structure on Maggie’s property.  Only we had grown out of that by the day it was finished being built. In June 2014 we moved Folklore to our first warehouse and after two years we needed to upgrade again! Now we have a warehouse and office in San Marcos where we work alongside our talented team of employees.

#MDSFlowerWorkshop Sponsor Creative Candles

For more than 50 years the artisans at Creative Candles have been hand-dipping and hand-pouring candles in Kansas City, Missouri. A unique proprietary blend of high-quality waxes is used to create beautiful one-of-a-kind candles and our craftsmen add their personal touch to give every candle a rich, matte finish. The result is truly something special – an exceptional smokeless, dripless candle with a slow and even burn.

As a small family-owned business our focus is always on relationships. Creative Candles’ service and sales representatives, clients and vendors are extensions of our family and those relationships are of the utmost importance to us.

Brick + Laurel Warehouse is a historic building built in the 40’s. When we first acquired the space we wanted to keep the mostly brick appearance to appreciate the original integrity of the building. The space has a very industrial look and high rafters. Common Good Coffee Roasters and Catalina Neal Floral Design share the warehouse which creates a real artistic collaborative environment. Our warehouse provides a great space for small gatherings of all kinds.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Nicole Clarey Photography

Overwhelmed by Instagram? We’re Here to Help

Ahh, Instagram. It’s the fun app to share silly photos with friends turned Social Media Marketing powerhouse. Instagram has now become arguably the most important app for creatives to showcase their work and help drive business in today’s online driven world. For a bride, it’s not only a quick way to see a photographer or floral designer’s portfolio, but it may be your first and only chance to woo her with your perfectly curated Instagram feed, a glance into what her perfectly curated wedding day could look like.

Though Instagram and other social media apps come second nature to some, for others, it can be totally overwhelming and a huge cause of stress. But guess what? It doesn’t have to be.

Kelly Perry, founder of both Team Flower & Philosophy Flowers, has a unique perspective on Instagram and how to go about using it to your benefit. In a few short weeks we’ll be sitting down with her for a Live Chat, and before we do, we want to hear from you!

So tell us, what are your biggest struggles with Instagram?

Kelly is also great at the visual aspect, so if you struggle with your feed, feel free to take a screen shot, send it to us, and you just might see your feed pop up during the chat, during which Kelly will openly discuss and give constructive criticism on ways to improve it.

You can use the comment box below, or send any screenshots, questions or concerns you’d love to hear during our chat to marketing@mayesh.com.

Catersource Vendor Feature: Pret A Fete

We had a blast at Catersource this year, in part because of our beautiful booth design! Local New Orlean’s designer Kim Starr Wise executed her vision to highlight our Mayesh Luxe Blooms to a T, using gorgeous rentals provided by NOLA Event Rentals company Pret A Fete

Owner Emily Shaya gave us the lowdown on her fabulous company, which was a result of her frustration in finding the perfect rentals for her own wedding.

Pret a Fete was founded to help you capture some of the New Orleans magic for your event, by offering stylish and sophisticated party rental decor and furniture. Our inventory contains high-quality vintage, antique and handcrafted pieces in a range of styles. We have worked hard to collect pieces that are not only beautiful, but functional, too.

Here are some fun vignettes for a little inspiration!
