Anemone

There are quite a few species of Anemone, but in this case we refer specifically to cultivars of Anemone coronaria. This flower has become tremendously popular of late, with more and more new cultivars. Especially gorgeous amongst the new introductions is “Hanoi” a pale blush pink with black center. Look for quite a few double varieties being introduced in 2021.

The delicate petals of Anemones bely an intrinsic strength, and are a high performance product that, while hardy when properly processed, retains its bucolic appeal.

There is educated conjecture that the “lily of the field” that Jesus references in Matthew 6:28, are indeed anemones. One great story, and which also seems to support this, is that when ships came back from the Crusades in the Holy Land, they had soil from Palestine that was used as ballast. In one instance, during the Middle Ages, the “Holy” soil was brought to the cathedral at Pisa where it was scattered across the grounds. The next spring thousands of corms sprouted bright red anemone flowers, deemed immediately to be a miracle by the Archbishop and a symbol of the blood of Christ.
