This flower has become a staple of the cut flower industry, but much like carnations and chrysanthemums have become so ubiquitous in supermarkets that their value as a designers’ bloom has somewhat diminished.
Most of the modern varieties we know today originate from a cross between two species discovered in 1925 in the Andes, and which was subsequently named alstroemeria ligtu var: ligtu.
Alstroemeria is easy to grow, it is very productive and comes in a wide range of colors. Despite the flowers’ delicate appearance, the alstroemerias are very hardy, with tremendous vase-life. Certainly worth experimenting with as a component, as the cost of goods is relatively low.
