Allium

Alliums is a large family of flowering bulbs, some of which have tremendous value as food, commonly known as Onions, Shallots, Chives, Leeks and Garlic. Indeed the scientific name allium is derived from the Roman name for garlic. There is some conjecture as to the origin of the name, but probably comes from the Ancient Greek word aleo, meaning “to avoid”.

For the floral professional, there is a wide selection of interesting blooms in many shapes and sizes, but whose flowers are umbels, sometimes so tightly packed with florets that the umbel resembles a sphere. They also come in a range of colors; generally purple and lavender, but also in white, blue, yellow and pink. The umbles are born on erect stems, running from 30cm 100cm, depending upon the variety.

New hybrids that engage the propensity for onions to grow serpentine stems, as well as forming bulbils in the flower head, are striking and endow designers with great sculptural forms. Most of these are originating in Japan, and are somewhat more expensive than other alliums.
