2016 Floral Fantasy Winner

We are always excited to see how far our customer’s creativity can go and that is why we love the Floral Fantasy contest so much! As with any contest, picking a winner wasn’t easy but our team got together and picked the design that really spoke to the “disco celebration of color” theme for our annual Art In Full Bloom event.

Without further ado we would like to congratulate Brent Wang of Miguel Changs on being the winner of this years Floral Fantasy contest.

Brent describes the concept for “Disco Cell” as “a peak into the inner implosion of prismic color activity within one mirrored cell of a disco ball. Using reflections, lights and color, it creates a voyeuristic experience with a disco ball at the cellular level”.

We can dig that!

Can’t wait to see your vision come to life, Brent!

2015 Art in Full Bloom Recap

Art in Full Bloom 2015
(Floral Fantasy winner, April Schwietz Mason of Mocha Rose)

This was the 4th annual Art in Full Bloom at our Mayesh Las Vegas branch. Each year it gets bigger and better and this year was no exception! Not only did we have an amazing turnout of about 200 guests but the art and flowers were out of this world. This year we added a new piece to the puzzle with a fashion show of designs from David Tupaz, Las Vegas’ premier couture designer. As always the entertainment for the night was provided by our two favorite ladies, Norma (Jim McCoy) and Doris (Jim Grifall) who gave us continuous laughs both on the stage and out mingling in the crowd. Our very own Design Star, Beth O’Reilly AIFD was also in attendance and gave a quick demo on how to make a flower crown. We even had a new addition to our photo booth… Johnny Depp! Well, the wax version of him from Madame Trousseau Wax Museum.

Mayesh would like to thank everyone who stopped by and joined in the festivities. Without you we wouldn’t have been able to raise over $6,000 for Safe Nest which is the driving force of this truly spectacular evening. We would also like to give a big thank you to Jim McCoy “Norma” and Jim Grifall “Doris”, MGM Resorts Events and of course the Floral Fantasy winners –Toni Andrade of Mayesh LAX and April Schwietz Mason of Mocha Rose Pittsburg, for making such outstanding designs. Great job to both of you ladies!

2015 Floral Fantasy Winners

Floral Fantasy

I love seeing what our customers dream up for our Floral Fantasy contest! Getting to go through the drawings and descriptions, I can feel the passion that each an every floral designer put into their designs. Like last year, we opened up the contest to our employees as well because we have so many talented designers and we want to give them the opportunity to get involved. As always, making a decision is never easy because we had so many amazing concepts entered. But alas, we did come to a decision and below you will find out our two winners, whose designs were both inspired by the French theme of our Art in Full Bloom event. Congratulations to April Schwietz Mason and Toni Andrade! Both winners will receive a trip for 2 to Las Vegas, be provided with the materials to create their floral fantasy, and have their designs showcased at Art in Full Bloom! Below are the details for both designs:

Floral Fantasy

April Schwietz Mason of Mocha Rose in Pittsburgh, PA is our customer winner! When reading through her description, all I could think is that I really want to see a floral 3-D interpretation of Monet’s Water Lilies!! Here is April’s thoughts on her Floral Fantasy:

“What many people do not know is that Monet himself had a great love of flowers, so much that he spent decades digging the gardens, creating the waterlily pond, breeding new varieties of iris and traveling to Paris to collect rare seeds. Before he created the paintings, he created the gardens themselves.

It is my floral fantasy to bring Monet’s paintings to life once again as a three dimensional flower wall. I chose this particular painting because it has a good opportunity for depth. The wall itself would be 6 foot high and 7 foot long. Then the design would extend out so that it is 2-3 feet deep. From the top, I would hang feather eucalyptus to mimic the willow trees. Then the flower wall with be filled with mixed shades of delphinium and hydrangeas to fill the pond. This will be the furthest back area in the design to create depth. At the bottom of the wall, the lily pads and flowers will be closer to the viewer in the front of the wall and I will make detailed 3 dimensional water lilies made from a composite of pink cymbidium orchid petals and the lily pads made from mini monstera leaves.

I would hope that if Monet were alive today, he would take pleasure in seeing his gardens that became treasured paintings will come alive again as a wall made out of flowers.”

Floral Fantasy

Toni Andrade, an Event Specialist of our Mayesh LAX branch, is a crazy talented designer and I was so excited to see that she entered this year! Toni wants to create the cabaret dancer, Edmonde Guydens, who wore a beautiful lace costume while performing at the Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris (1926).

“I will recreate the lace costume with garden roses, lacey greens and novelty floral, and place it on a posed mannequin. My Floral Fantasy with be mostly flowers; however, other materials with be utilized to create texture and interest.”

We hope that if you are in the Las Vegas area on November 13th for our annual Art in Full Bloom event to benefit SafeNest (click here for more information).

2014 Art in Full Bloom Recap

On November 14, Mayesh Las Vegas hosted their third annual Art in Full Bloom Benefit for SafeNest; a not-profit working with domestic crisis issues in Nevada.  The event had a great turn out and community response was absolutely amazing.

Over 30 local florists and 10 local artists exhibited their work along with the two winners of Mayesh’s national Floral Fantasy contest, Korie Mulleady and Noralyn Romak.  College of Southern NV student, Jessica Huth, won the student competition and for ‘Best Use of Color’; Danei Fowler and Rick Crause won Best in Art and Floral category, and Belinda Delcamp won Best in Flowers and Fashion.  A strolling pair of drag society matrons entertained the crowd with some comedy.  A silent auction, live demos by AIFD members, Julie Reed and Kenny Snauwert, and a live auction rounded out the evening.  Mayesh Las Vegas wants to thank everyone who participated and donated their time, effort, and resources for the event and made it a truly one of a kind experience.

Check out some pictures from the night below (click to view larger pictures on Facebook).  And don’t forget to check out all of the great posts on Instagram from the event!  http://ink361.com/app/tag/artinfullbloom

Art in Full Bloom: Floral Fantasy Flower Wall

Art in Full Bloom Flower Wall

We are still compiling all of the great images from Art in Full Bloom, but I wanted to share what Korie Mulleady, our Floral Fantasy winner, created for the event!  Such a great concept – an interactive flower wall in which event guests were invited to cover the domestic violence words with flowers.  Such a powerful message, don’t you think?

2014 Mayesh Floral Fantasy Contest Winners

2014 Mayesh Floral Fantasy

Early September, we announced our Mayesh Floral Fantasy Contest, awarding one lucky and creative customer the opportunity to design anything they wanted and a trip for two to Las Vegas for our Art in Full Bloom benefit!  We had no idea how well received our new contest would be, but it was surrounded by much excitement.  Due to our customers getting excited to participate, we thought it would be fun to open an internal contest to our Mayesh staff as well as we have many creative designers throughout our company.  Both sets of entries were amazing with so many brilliant design ideas submitted.  Choosing was difficult and the winners debated, but we are all excited to finally reveal our 2 Floral Fantasy winners – Korie Mulleadyand Noralyn Romak!!  Congratulations!  Read on to get the details of Korie’s and Nora’s fantasy designs as submitted to Mayesh!

Korie Mulleady, of The Enchanted Florist in Orange, California

2014 Mayesh Floral Fantasy Winner

I wouldn’t be surprised if, while looking at this rendering, you thought to yourself, “What is that?”

First of all, let me assure you that my floral design skills are far superior to my drawing skills.

What you’re looking at is a wall made up of half cinder blocks. With the center of the wall being composed of blocks of standard floral foam painted to look like brick. This part of the wall has been covered with graffiti. All of the words on the wall are things that someone who has been a victim of domestic violence would have experienced. Surrounding it will be my part of the design which is done on the cinder blocks. At the base of the wall will be wheat grass (or a moss runner) covered with white, cream, or pastel flowers. I would like to invite the attendees of the event to use those flowers to transform the “brick” part of the wall. The flowers on the ground will already be cut short and the attendees can pick them up and press them into the floral foam – completing the rest of the design.

The unique aspect of my design is that the finished product won’t be entirely my creation. It won’t be complete until the guests help cover the graffiti on the wall. This allows attendees to do more than admire a beautiful piece. It gives them the opportunity to experience the flowers for themselves and share in the design process.
I also love the way this design relates back the theme of the evening. Seeing the awful words on the wall might be startling to people but it is a reminder of why we are there. In the end, with the help of the guests, the transformation of the wall is complete and the ugliness that was once there is replaced by beauty. Similarly their donations to Safe Nest help transform the lives of those who are victims of domestic violence.

The wall itself is made up of 96 half cinder blocks and measures 81” (6’9”) in length and 65” (5’4”) high and 2’6”deep. Currently I have this design as being viewed from both sides. A portion of the wall has been set up in the back of my store for about a week now just to make sure it will go as planned.

I am a second generation florist who had to walk to the shop after school and vowed never to work in the industry. Seven years ago I broke my hip in a horseback riding accident and haven’t left the shop since! This contest is an amazing opportunity and I thank you for considering my design for the Floral Fantasy competition.

Noralyn Romak of our Detroit branch

2014 Mayesh Floral Fantasy Winner

The accumulation of my ideas fall into the floral fashion category.  I think Mother Nature embodies the beauty she creates from the stem to the bloom, the moss to the mushroom and the branch to the leaf. She is one with what she creates & wears it well.

The foundation for the bodice is constructed using duct tape and a t-shirt. Which is then set upon the under skirt structure comprised of bound branching. Burlap is then draped around the sides & down the back creating a train. The bodice will be covered in woven grass & foliage with a floral collar draping along the top around the arms. The burlap skirting will be covered with flower groupings, foliage mosses and other natural items. Ideally a crown would also be made of similar products and a branch scepter.

Flowers could include ocean song roses, precious moments garden roses, spray roses, kale, moss assortment, curly willow, sponge mushrooms (or others available), pods (scabiosa, nigella..),green ball dianthus, eucalyptus assortment, fern curls, fern assortment (davalia, myerii, flat, plumosus..), woodwardia, chocolate lace, purple ranuculus, amaranthus upright & hanging, waxflower, magical thistle, gomphrena, flowering artichokes, veronica, larkspur, green banksia, berzelia, leucadendron, agonis, black privet/blue berried viburnum, scotch broom (not flowering), aussie greens, rosehips, lotus pods, assorted grasses (xl bear, lily grass…) sorghum, green millet, sedum, nandina, green wheat, black ti leaves, agonis, and robellini.
Korie and Nora, we will see you in Vegas!
