Writing a Press Relase

Write your own “Press Release” summarizing ways to accessories the home with flowers or a recent event such as a house party or wedding that required your talents and submit it to the editor or columnist. A press release is a short document that provides information about your organization's events and activities to a newspaper, magazine, TV or radio station.

The news agency may use the information in a story or they might contact you for an interview, or they may not use it at all. In some instances if the press release is well written, it might get printed with only minor changes.
Keep in mind that your press release must be seen as beneficial” to the reader; you'll have a greater chance of having it published.

National Magazines
Take clues from national publications such as “House & Garden” and “Veranda” magazine. These publications almost always feature the work of floral designers on a monthly basis. Consumer publications have offered exceptional coverage in 2004 to our industry. By featuring the creative talents of floral designers these magazines provide ideas on accessorizing the home with flowers and is an excellent channel to advertise your business in exchange for design service to the publication.

The Hollywood Connection
Like never before the floral industry as a whole has one huge opportunity to take the leap into every day homes with virtually free PR from Hollywood. The role of the traditional florists has indeed changed. However, flower shops are prospering by diversifying their services to include interior work, party planning and wedding coordination. Certainly not all shops can be everything to every body; but to those that intend to prosper carve out your niche and explore how “marketing” not “selling” can make a business grow.

Opportunity Knocks

In conclusion, though recently published statistics reflect erosion of market share for florist there is a much brighter future than most expected.

By looking at the larger picture of our industry if you have perseverance, a mindset that's open to change and a personality that extends beyond our own egos in reaching out to network, shop owners will not only survive but thrive in an environment that's ripe for your services now.
